Axe

Although we're all aware of what the axe is, firefighter need to know more than "it chops wood". We commonly use at least two different types of axe, the flat-head and the pick-head axe. They can both be used in many different ways, but primarily as striking and cutting tools. Just as their names indicated, the flat-head axe has a blade on one end and a flat head on the other, whereas a pick-head axe has a blade on one end coupled with a striking pick.

Modern axes are rarely made with wood anymore. Today's firefighters typically use a fiberglass handled axe with a very resilient metal alloy for the head. They can stand more use than wooden handled axes.

Flat Head Axe

The flat-head axe is half of "the irons", a popular tool combination in conjunction with the Halligan bar. The blade side of the tool is used to get through doors or windows, and the flat head can be used as a striking point to force open doors, break locks, or provide leverage.  It's rare to see firefighters enter a building without at least one flat head axe.
