Introduction

Fire prevention isn't as much fun as fighting fire, but it's considered one of the most important roles of the Fire Department. It's in your best interest as a firefighter to pursue this endeavor as well, because fewer fires means fewer firefighter fatalities. Holy moly, that's a lot of F words.

Fire prevention is any number of activities that help prevent fires, or reduce the damage caused by a fire. Some of the more common examples would be enforcing fire codes, conducting inspections, or visiting the nearby elementary school to educate minors about fire safety.

The good news is that a booter will rarely be the authority on fire code, and most firefighters will have plenty of time in the field before they're expected to know everything about building codes and fire prevention. That being said, this information will likely show up on a state fire marshall's exam so let's cover the basics.
