Wildland Urban Interface

Oftentimes wildland fires will not simply burn forest and shrubbery, but spread to areas where people live and induce structure fires. This is known as a wildland urban interface. This can be the most dangerous situation for fire departments across the country because large fires can occur in an area where fire protection is minimal.

The potential for property loss in wildland urban interface areas is huge, and is the primary reason why Firefighter I & II certifications are beginning to include programs that require a basic understanding of wildland fire.
